SVP Theater auditorium renamed the Tony and Anne Hill Playhouse

Picture
On December 21, 2021, the Stoughton Village Players Board was pleased to announce a very special designation in our lobby. The custom-designed, art deco piece was unveiled indicating to all that our auditorium and performing space is now named the Tony and Anne Hill Playhouse. This was done not only for their involvement in starting SVP but also their leadership throughout our history.

2022 marks the 50-year anniversary of SVP which will be celebrated in many ways throughout the year. The Board could think of no better way to start off this special time than with acknowledging our founders. As Tony said at the unveiling event, there were many that met in MaryLou Fendrick’s kitchen in 1972 with an idea to start a theater group so he wanted to accept the recognition on their behalf. He also mentioned that SVP is the sum of many people’s hard work and he was humbled that he and Anne were singled out.

Of course, members and friends understand that the Hills have been an unparalleled driving force for our group in many ways over these decades… making sure we survived, grew and prospered. Of course, we would not have been able to purchase our beautiful, historic landmark building without Tony’s involvement but both he and Anne have been our “first couple” in many other ways as well.

In an organization of volunteers and teams of people all contributing their time and talents, it is often difficult to pick anyone out of the crowd for special recognition… but this was a no-brainer. We were lucky to have Tony and Anne there at the beginning and even luckier that they are still here making sure we create, evolve and build for our next 50 years.

Congratulations to Tony and Anne Hill… and all those who make SVP special.

Badger Theater celebrates 100 years!

Stoughton Village Theatre celebrates its centennial
Stoughton Courier Hub

As you know, our theater opened in 1921 so we have lots of events, videos and other celebratory stuff happening this year. One interesting date is that the first movie shown at the Badger Theater (our predecessor) was Isobel on MARCH 29, 1921... almost exactly 100 years ago.

FOR THOSE WHO SUPPORT THEATER AND THE ARTS, HERE IS THE BEST GIFT OF ALL:
Like many in Stoughton and in our changed world, SVP was impacted by the coronavirus.  We had to cancel The Foreigner (in 2020), which was six days away from opening (after eight weeks of rehearsal and set-building) and then our Syttende Mai show (which represents about half our annual income) was also cancelled along with the rest of our beloved festival.

People have asked how we are doing and what can they do to support SVP to make sure we can continue to be a center for local arts and entertainment. We have adjusted our plans and hope to get back onstage for our 2020/21 season. To help us get through this tough financial time, we offer four opportunities for your consideration (click the links below for details and photos):

1. Become a member ($20 annually)
2. Buy a dedication brick in the sidewalk in front of the theater ($100 and $300)
3. Buy a chair arm dedication plaque in the theater auditorium ($200)
4. Donate

Thanks to our audiences who have supported us through our nearly 50 years of existence. We look forward to seeing you soon.
